REPLY, OR THE USELESS COMBAT

2012

“I am weary of this mediocre existence, lacking in prospects and confidence in the future. I must necessarily refer to this existence as ‘I’, as I cannot separate myself from it.”

Marguerite Yourcenar

“Liquids, unlike solids, cannot easily hold their shape. Fluids, so to speak, neither fix space nor bind time. Fluids do not keep to any shape for long and are constantly ready (and prone) to change it; and so, for them it is the flow of time that counts, more than the space they happen to occupy.”

Zygmunt Bauman

Reply, or the useless combat takes part of its title from the novel Alexis by the French writer Marguerite Yourcenar. The work is the result of the biographical experience of the repetition and recurrence of traumatic experiences with the constant difficulty of change, and how fears and frustrations end in a desperately remaining limbo. The work project consists of three video pieces without sound that deal time and space, and the fluid quality they keep, besides how the digression of events, the everyday and the change, establish a constant permanence that does not seem to manifest the changes that underlie its statics.

The work was exhibited in 2012 at the now nonexistent Galería Oficina Barroca in Santiago; Casa Nekoe in Valparaíso [Chile, 2012], and in the group exhibition Liquid at the Yaku Museo del Agua in Quito [Ecuador, 2013].
